Is an LED Light Bar Legal in the UK?
LED light bars are off-road equipment in the UK. Using one on the road is only legal if it is type-approved and positioned and wired like a proper driving lamp, which very few bars are.
Why?
UK lighting law works on approval: any forward lamp used on the road must be an approved type, mounted within the permitted heights and widths, and wired to behave correctly - a driving lamp, for instance, may only come on with main beam and must switch off with it.
Almost no LED bar on the market is e-marked as a road driving lamp. They are built and sold as off-road equipment, and using one lit on the public road makes it an unapproved lamp that will usually also dazzle oncoming traffic - a lighting offence.
Having a bar fitted is not itself the problem: covered or properly disconnected for road use, it can pass an MOT, and on private land it can do what it likes. The line is switching it on, on the road.
What decides if it's legal
- Using an unapproved light bar on the road is not legal; most bars are sold for off-road use.
- Any forward lamp used on the road must be type-approved, correctly positioned and correctly wired.
- A road-used bar must only work with main beam and must not dazzle other drivers.
- Fitted but properly disconnected/covered for off-road use, a bar can pass the MOT.
Does it depend on your car?
The rules are the same for every vehicle; what differs is mounting. Bars sit naturally on 4x4s and pickups with roof or bumper mounts, while on a low car there is rarely a compliant place to put one at all.
